With "Barbie" on the brink of claiming the title of the year's highest-grossing release at the domestic box office, Greta Gerwig's vibrant pink comedy is poised to take an even grander stage. Warner Bros. has scheduled an IMAX presentation for the film, featuring a limited one-week run starting from September 22nd. This IMAX release will also showcase exclusive new post-credits scenes curated by the film's director.
The intentions, encompassing a rollout across North America and selected international regions, were unveiled by Warner Bros. executives Jeff Goldstein, President of Domestic Distribution, and Andrew Cripps, President of International Distribution, on Wednesday afternoon. Greta Gerwig also shared her thoughts in the announcement.
“We made Barbie for the big screen, so it’s a thrill to be able to bring it to IMAX, the biggest screen of all. As a special thanks to Barbie fans, we’re excited to share a little bit more of our cast and crew’s incredible work by adding special new footage we hope audiences will enjoy.” Gerwig said in a statement to Variety.
In slightly over a month of theatrical presence, "Barbie" has surged as the summer's box office sensation, amassing a staggering $572 million in ticket sales within North America and an impressive $1.3 billion globally. What makes Warner Bros.' theatrical achievement even more notable is that "Barbie" initially missed out on high-end cinematic formats like IMAX to Universal's "Oppenheimer," Christopher Nolan's sweeping biographical epic released on the same day. Consequently, "Barbie" couldn't benefit from premium ticket pricing in these venues. Nonetheless, even without such advantages, the film is on track to surpass "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" ($1.359 billion worldwide) and secure the mantle of 2023's top-grossing release.
